BR549 RUNS INTO THE ROCK IN NYC:
Last week the boys of BR549 were in NYC to perform on NBC's Late Night with Conan O'Brien and MSNBC's Don Imus Show. One of Conan's guests was the famed WWF wrestler and actor, THE ROCK. As it turns out, one of the band members' brother, who is fixture on Nashville's lower Broadway, has always claimed that The Rock was one of his buddies. Well, the BR549 guys never really believed him but figured now was the time to see if it was true. So they caught up with THE ROCK backstage and asked him if he knew Gary's brother......The ROCK immediately pulled his cell phone out and showed the band the brothers' phone number he had programmed in his cell phone book ! The band was blown away and insisted that THE ROCK call him right away, he did and they all shared a good laugh.

TAMMY COCHRAN UP FOR TWO BILLBOARD MUSIC VIDEO AWARD NOMS!
The Billboard Music Video Award 2001 nominees were announced today and Epic newcomer Tammy Cochran received two nominations for her "Angels In Waiting" effort which pays homage to her two older brothers Alan and Shawn. Both boys passed away from cystic fibrosis. Cochran was nominated for 'Best Country New Artist Clip of the Year' and 'Best Contemporary Christian New Artist Clip of The Year' (an honor shared with Sony labelmate Billy Gilman who won in this catogory last year). "This single and video just continue to be a blessing to both me and my parents. I'm so glad that we included the footage of my brothers in it because it helps me to think that they won't be forgotten," says Cochran.

The video features 8mm home video footage of the boys in healthier times and was conceived and co-directed by Cochran along with Sony's Deb Haus. "Even though the song's message was a chance for me to pay tribute to them on my first album, it has ended up encouraging a lot of others who are dealing with losses too," notes Cochran. "And that gives me a lot of comfort, personally. The song just seems to have a life of it's own!"

Cochran maintains an effort to keep up with the personal emails that are sent to her through the Sony Nashville web site from fans who've seen the music video or heard the top 20 single and relate to it in various ways - many have loved ones who also suffer from Cystic Fibrosis, some are dealing with other incurable diseases like Muscular Dystrophy or AIDS, and others just react to it on a pure, gut emotional level.

CLEDUS T. & TOBY KEITH HAVE A MOMENT
We sent out a story yesterday regarding Cledus T. Judd resuming his tour hosting duties on the last show of the Neon Circus tour in Pittsburgh. Well even though Judd was excited when he told his publicist, on Friday 8/3, that his mother was home & doing better after surgery and he would be re-joining the tour for the last date, it didn't quite work out that way. The Monument artist was set to have his bus pick him up, at his mother's home in Georgia, on Saturday. When the time came to leave, Judd was so worried about the state of his mothers' health that he opted to stay home with her instead of making the last show. On Sunday, day of the last Neon Circus tour, Judd was disappointed about not being to celebrate the success of the tour with his new friends and tour mates. To help console himself, he went out and bought the latest disc's (since his cd collection was on his bus in Nashville) of each artist on the Neon Circus tour (Brooks & Dunn, Toby Keith, Keith Urban and Montgomery Gentry). Judd claims that driving around his hometown all afternoon just listening to their music and sorting through his memories from the tour helped him to keep from being upset that he wasn't there for the last show. Later that same evening (approximately 8:40pm according to the Monument artist), Judd & his mother were home watching CMT when Toby Keith's new video came on the television. Just about half way through the video the phone rang, Judd picked it up and heard what he thought was static. Just as he was about to hang up, he heard Toby Keith saying "We got this guy on the phone who has been with us, keeping this tour rolling throughout 39 or so shows and tonight he couldn't be with us 'cause his mama is not doing to well. Please give it up for my friend, Cledus T. Judd. Let'em hear ya Pittsburgh!" After hearing the crowd going wild on the other end of the phone, Judd said, " I nearly broke down cryin right there on the spot." Toby ended the call by saying "How do you like me now bud? We'll talk to you after the show."

ON THE ROAD WITH BILLY GILMAN
Billy Gilman is gracing the current cover of the Fall Issue of Target's quarterly magazine, Target The Family. In the cover story the talented teen discusses life on a bus including his summer tour and how it will be a rolling vacation, unlike any others. Just this past weekend Gilman found time to experience several roller coaster rides during a gig at Paramount's Kings Island amusement park with contest winners from one of Cincinnati's country stations, WUBE. He warmed up for the ride with fans by going earlier in the day with his brother and mom to ride the "upside down" roller coaster! This week, Gilman heads back home to his neck of the woods on July 9th, when he makes an appearance at the local Walmart store in Gilford, New Hampshire.

PATTY LOVELESS MAKES NEWSWEEK
Look for Epic songstress Patty Loveless in the current issue of Newsweek magazine (August 6 issue) where the national magazine takes a rare look at a country artist when they profile the Pikeville, Kentucky-born and -raised singer and her career-defining new acoustic album, Mountain Soul. Writer David Gates gets inside the process and the music of Loveless' most recent project in a piece titled "Going Back To The Mountain." The
breathtaking Mountain Soul disc prompted Gates to note the package's "telltale signs of humanity." He then proclaims: "Loveless' heart and soul are in the right place: back home in the mountains.

Loveless was characteristically honest and humble recounting the process that went into creating the album's organic, authentic feel. Laughing she explains to Gates, "The way Emory would put it to you is 'Here it is, warts and all.' When we'd listen back to it, I'd hear my little mistakes and I'd go, 'Oh, honey. Oh, can't I just go back in and-' 'No'." "So where's a wart?" writes Gates in the freewheeling piece, before returning to his conversation with the teasing award-winner. "Loveless laughs. 'I'm not gonna tell you.'"

Look for Mountain Soul in upcoming issues of Rolling Stone and Spin -- and for Patty to perform with her bluegrass compadres on the Oct. 27th broadcast of PBS' longest-running music series "Austin City Limits."

PATTY LOVELESS SUFFERS FOR HER ART
Patty Loveless recently spent a day with a photographer for an upcoming feature in Newsweek magazine...but she had a problem at the photo shoot because of some pesky dress straps. The location was a picturesque farm off the Natchez Trace Parkway but several photos were ruined when the straps of her dress kept falling down. The songstress was aided by stylist Claudia Fowler who cleverly solved the strap problem by plucking some tall grass and weaving it through the straps. Patty was happy with the fix but didn't like the itch of the grass.

"It was a little scratchy," Loveless admits, "but ruining all the pictures with me scrambling for the straps was even worse. And you know, you only think of these sorts of things when you absolutely have to! I'd've never gone there, but I'm sure glad Claudia did."

THE MANY FACES OF BILLY GILMAN
Last week found Billy Gilman involved in activities both poignant and downright silly. In Washington, D.C., the singer performed at the Fraternal Order of Police's annual tribute to fallen officers. The audience included President Bush and his family as well as family members of officers killed this past year in the line of duty. The audience was visibly moved by his powerful performance of his smash hit, "One Voice" and they rewarded his performance with a standing ovation.

On May 24, Billy spent his 13th birthday with his family on the set of Nickelodeon's "Slimetime Live." The singer got to "pie" his younger brother Colin in the face, but shortly after, the tables were turned when the show brought out a birthday cake for Billy. He was most excited when he got 'slimed' with the famous green goo and walked away with a bottle to show his friends at home. He spent the rest of his birthday weekend visiting all the Orlando theme parks with his family.

Emily Robison and Natalie Mains of the Dixie Chicks are featured in the June issue "Dallas D" magazine along with their dogs Buddy and Ralph, respectively. Robison and her mixed breed pooch are on the cover while Natalie and her bulldog are featured in an inside story.

"There is no dog in the world as great as a bulldog," said an obviously proud Maines. "Ralph entertains 24 hours a day. He is Mr. Personality and he brought great atmosphere to the tour."

MONTGOMERY GENTRY’S ‘HONKY TONK ON WHEELS’
Montgomery Gentry's new decked out tour bus is living up to its moniker of a "honky tonk on wheels". Tuesday night in Bakersfield and Saturday at the Gorge in George, Washington all of the artists on the "Neon Circus and Wild West Show" ended up on Troy and Eddie's bus for an impromptu guitar pull.

"We had Kix and Ronnie, Toby and Keith Urban all passin' the guitar around singin' songs," said Eddie, "It doesn't get any better than that." Word evidently spread before Saturday's guitar pull, and the bus was so packed Keith Urban had to enter through a side window to join the festivities!

BILLY GILMAN GOES SCHOLASTIC
Billy surprised Scholastic executives this month when he applied to become a member of the Student Advisory Board of Junior Scholastic, a bi-weekly news magazine geared to ages 11 to 14 years of age. Billy, along with nine young advisers, will serve as a student adviser for one year offering feedback on some of the magazine issues. Billy was selected from among hundreds of applicants. "I am home schooled and I find Junior Scholastic very valuable for my education," said Billy. "I do a lot of traveling because of my music and I meet kids from all over the country. I'm really excited about being on the Student Advisory Board because now I can share with Junior Scholastic what they are interested in." In the January 8, 2001 issue of Junior Scholastic, students were invited to write a brief essay on why they would make a good adviser in addition to giving some overall suggestions about the magazine. The ten advisers that are selected provide feedback on select issues of the magazine as well as work with Junior Scholastic reporters to exchange opinions and advice on news stories about teenage interests and issues. "Billy's advisory board application came as a complete surprise," says Lee Baier, editor of Junior Scholastic. "We are really looking forward to having Billy on our Advisory Board. He, along with nine other kid advisers help us to keep the magazine in tune with the interests of our readers." BILLY WINS AT COUNTRY MUSIC EXPO Billy's performance at the WFMS / WGRL Country Music Expo in Indianapolis was a big success in more ways than one. The show boasted the largest attendance in the event's history. Also, the singer's 25-minute set started with a standing ovation the second he hit the stage and ended with several thousand people singing along to his groundbreaking hit "One Voice."

JOHN ANDERSON's GOT IT ALL
His Columbia Records debut album Nobody's Got It All on is just out but John Anderson is already collecting stellar reviews for the project. Critics from People and USA Today have been united in their praise of Anderson's new project. "Two decades after he made his mark as a forerunner of country's New Traditionalism, John Anderson refuses to bend much with the prevailing Nashville winds," observed a Nick Cristiano from the Philadelphia Inquirer. "Like his more successful contemporaries George Strait and Alan Jackson, the singer with the honeyed baritone remains true to the old without sounding like a fossil. The horn-fueled "You Ain't Hurt Nothin' Yet" opens the set with a funky, Band-like blast, and Anderson closes with Springsteen's "Atlantic City." In general, though, the music is thoroughly honky-tonk in character, with traces of bluegrass, boogie and gospel. The songs, meanwhile, affectingly address bedrock country themes - the importance of faith and family, fears about the future - while offering bits of down-home wisdom (the title track) and tongue-in-cheek self-pity ("It Ain't Easy Being Me," "Baby's Gone Home to Mama"). To borrow from "Atlantic City," Anderson may not have died, but he has certainly come back - Nobody's Got It All is one of his strongest efforts."

Levon Helm then joined the band as they backed him on 'Rollin' In My Sweet Baby's Arms'. Don Herron, BR549's pedal steel player extraordinaire, was later a featured guest in Jackson Browne's band on the song 'Bright Baby Blues' and went to rock 'n' roll heaven as Keith Richards brought him up to play on the Stones' classic 'Happy.' BR549 are currently wrapping up in the studio with producer Paul Worley (Dixie Chicks, Martina McBride, etc), on their first recordings for Lucky Dog Records - projected to be released in June 2001. MONTGOMERY GENTRY RODEO?
There was a whole lot of bull at Cowboy's in Colorado Springs this past weekend! After a sold-out, typcially raucous Montgomery Gentry show, Troy Gentry found himself hanging underneath a bull...a living, kicking, snorting, real life, angry bull! It was Troy's second ride of the night to a cheering crowd at Cowboy's Indoor Rodeo Arena when his flag jacket got caught in the bull's rigging. Troy was thrown under the spinning 1200+pound creature! He managed to break loose but not before the bull shredded the right leg of his jeans, leaving Troy with a 12-inch hoof rake and cuts to his leg and a bruised left arm. Sore but otherwise unharmed Troy said, " It was something I always wanted to do. The bulls were there. I had to ride 'em!" Cowboy up, T-Roy!! Look for Montgomery Gentryıs sophomore album Carrying On, featuring their hit single ³She Couldnıt Change Me,² to hit stores May 1.

Montgomery Gentry Repeat R&R Reader' Poll Award
Two days after hearing about their ACM nomination for "Top Vocal Duo," the reigning CMA "Duo of the Year" Montgomery Gentry have been named "Top Country Duo" for the second consecutive year in the annual Radio & Records' Readers Poll. R&R's Nashville Bureau Chief Lon Helton surprised the guys by presenting the award to them on stage prior to their no-holds-barred performance during Country Radio Seminar last week. "It was too cool when we won this last year," said Troy Gentry. "Having our friends at radio give us this award again really feels like a vote of confidence." Eddie Montgomery added, "Yeah, when you're out there night after night hitting it, you get a good idea what people like, but man, this is the industry and it sure feels great." Montgomery Gentry broke Brooks & Dunn's seven-year hold on the award last year, and they show no signs of slowing down. Their current single "She Couldn't Change Me"- from their upcoming album Carrying On- made a six and five point jump in R&R and Billboard, respectively. They just inked a sponsorship deal for their upcoming tour with whiskey giant Jim Beam, and they are on the bill for the hottest tour of the year- Brooks & Dunn Neon Circus and Wild West Show.

MONTGOMERY GENTRY -ACM "TOP VOCAL DUO" NOM
When hard-core country honky tonkers Montgomery Gentry won an American Music Award for "Best New Country Act" in January of 2000, they knew it was going to be a good year. When they took home the "Top New Duo or Group" from the Academy of Country Music, they knew it was going to be a great year. And winning the Country Music Association's "Vocal Duo of the Year" capped off the most incredible year of their lives. That is, until this week, when their names were announced as nominees by the ACM in the "Top Vocal Duo" category. "It's an incredible honor to be nominated in the same category with two legends like Brooks & Dunn and The Judds," said an elated Eddie Montgomery. "Yeah, it's also really gratifying when you work your butt off year after year and do your best to put together great albums and a great stage show, and the industry ? your peers ? recognize you for it," added Troy Gentry. The guys have been busy in the studio putting the finishing touches on their sophomore Columbia release, Carrying On, which will hit stores May 1. COLLIN RAYE HONORED WITH CRS HUMANITARIAN AWARD
Epic Recording artist Collin Raye has received numerous awards and accolades for his six platinum albums and endless miles of touring, but none measure up to the honor he received yesterday when he received the prestigious Artist Humanitarian Award from the Country Radio Broadcasters, Inc. (CRB). Collin was lured to the gathering by his manager under the guise he was there to do an interview with broadcasting legend Sam Donaldson, who was the keynote speaker for the Country Radio Seminar opening ceremonies. He was stunned to hear last yearıs recipient Clint Black call his name from stage during the presentation. "This means more to me than any award I could get for a song or an album or a video," said Collin. "I accept this on behalf of all the people who work for these organizations day after day for no recognition at all; theyıre the real heroes." With a long list of credits and extensive service to charities and communities nationally and worldwide, this yearıs CRB, Inc. Selection Committee found Collin to be the obvious choice for the annual award. In addition to serving as an ambassador to Childhelp USA, he has worked with USA Weekendıs Make A Difference Day as a celebrity judge for the past two years. He is an active participant in raising awareness for the Native American organization Hecel Oyakapi, and he has been recognized by several groups including the Tennessee Task Force Against Domestic Violence for his work in combating violence against women and children. Last year he visited a refugee camp in Macedonia and witnessed first-hand the devastation in war-torn Kosovo. Collin helped deliver supplies, visited troops and generally offered help and hope just as he has done here at home time and again. Over the past five years Collin has hosted a benefit concert in his hometown of DeQueen, Arkansas, raising well over $100,000 for scholarships, school programs, music instruments, community improvements and even an all-weather track for a local high school. This, in part, lead to his being named Arkansan of the Year in 1996. Organizations like Silent Witness National Initiative, Al-Anon, Alateen, Special Olympics, First Steps, United Cerebral Palsy, Emily Harrison Foundation, Dreammakers and countless others have all benefited from Collin Rayeıs involvement. According to CRB President Ed Salamon, "Each year Country Radio Broadcasters, Inc. recognizes another of the many deserving country artists with its Artist Humanitarian Award. Although this yearsı honoree has extended his charitable efforts to many worth causes, Collin Rayıs contribution as Ambassador for Childhelp USA has had a particular impact on the lives of children who have been victims of abuse and neglect, as well as the attitudes of adults on this subject. His high degree of personal involvement sets a great example for his fellow artists." Past winners of the Artist Humanitarian Award include Billy Ray Cyrus, Joe Diffie, Clint Black, Reba McEntire, Charlie Daniels, Garth Brooks, Vince Gill and Kenny Rogers.

TAMMY COCHRAN EARNS ACM NOD
Epic Records newcomer Tammy was ecstatic to receive news that she was nominated by the Academy of Country Music for "Top New Female Vocalist." Her first major nomination, the nod comes two months before her self-titled debut album hits stores. "This is an incredible thrill for me," said Tammy about her ACM nomination. "This has been my dream for as long as I can remember, and it really reinforces all the decisions and sacrifices I've made to get to this point." Among those choices, Cochran chose band gear over the offer of a new car from her parents when she was 16 and "Nashville-or-bust" over college. Following her move to Nashville in 1991, she worked odd jobs during the day and sang at clubs by night. "I pretty much played the 'animal clubs,'" she recalls. "The Elks, The Moose, The Eagles. My band and I played weddings and fairs and made fifty or sixty dollars each a night, which was pretty good when most of my friends were working at McDonald's." Tammy Cochran is set to hit stores May 1, and the sometimes gritty, always honest 10 tracks are already stirring the industry. "Cochran gives a gutsy performance that should help place her above the current pack of new country chanteuses," said Billboard. And Pulse Magazine printed, "Most female country singers these days come on as if trying to convince you to buy something; Cochran sings like she wants you to feel something." While MusicRow magazine offers "If Tammy Cochran is one of the new torch bearers of the country tradition?we're in good hands." Cochran conceived and co-directed her new music video for the emotion-charged single "Angels In Waiting." She co-wrote the touching song with Jim McBride and Stewart Harris as a tribute to her two older brothers, Shawn and Alan, who died of Cystic Fibrosis.

BILLY RAY CYRUS COMMENTS ON DALE EARNHARDT DEATH
Billy Ray Cyrus Quote about Dale Earnhardt "I had the pleasure of spending time with Dale Earnhardt at the Atlanta Motor Speedway last November during the Darrell Waltrip retirement ceremony. The race was rained out that day, which gave several of the top drivers the opportunity to relax and hang out with Darrell. I realize now how thankful I am for that rain, because I got to visit with Dale. For the rest of my life I will thank Almightly God that I stayed the next day to sing the National Anthem and watch the race. Richard Childress [owner of Dale Earnhardt's famous black #3 Chevrolet] invited me to sit with him by Dale's pit to watch the race, which blew me away. Who would've thought that would be the last race the #3 car would complete?" "My stepfather was such a huge Dale Earnhardt fan that he was buried in a Dale Earnhardt t-shirt. I had told Richard Childress that story a while back, and Dale made a comment about it when I saw him in Atlanta." "Dale Earnhart's life and dedication to the sport of racing defines the true meaning of 'Some Gave All.' His legacy will live forever."
