The Kinleys II
Song-By-Song
"She Ain't The Girl For You" (Vince Melamed/Jon McElroy)
Heather: I loved this song from the first time I heard it. And,
apparently, so did Chely Wright. We saw her in the studio, and
she said that she had called to put this song on hold, but that
we already had it. We felt a little bad...but we did take advantage
of the situation and asked her to come sing background vocals!
Jennifer: It was fun, because it was a real girl's night. Chely
was very impressive in the studio; she really knows what she's
doing. Heather: The funny part was that when she came to sing,
she brought her new puppy, Minnie, and she held her the whole
time she was singing. It was hilarious to watch. In the credits,
it's listed as "Chely and Minnie Wright."
"I'm In" (Radney Foster/Georgia Middleman)
Jennifer: When Radney (Foster) first played us this song, we said,
"That's where we want to go. That's where we want to be." We love
the way the harmonies weave in and out, and we had been looking
for a song like this for awhile. Heather: I love the way Jennifer
sings on this. Everytime I hear it, I become a fan of hers all
over again.
"You're Still Here" (Sarah Majors/Adam Hughes/D. Vincent Williams)
Jennifer: Three brilliant writers got in a room and created this
wonderful song. One of them happens to be my husband, Adam Hughes,
and I'm so proud of him for writing it. Heather: When I'm singing
this song, it takes me right along with it. It's impossible to
not get into it. We've been getting great response when we do
it on the road.
"If Ever I Needed You" (Jennifer Kinley/Heather Kinley/Radney
Foster)
Jennifer: The first time we got together to write with Radney,
we went to a retreat up in the mountains of Tennessee, to get
away from everything going on in Nashville. It was beautiful up
there and we wrote this song. He's an amazing writer, and he has
a way of pulling emotions out of us. Heather: We've written ballads
before, but this is the first big power ballad we've ever written.
It's such a yearning song and we're really proud of it.
"That's Gonna Mess You Up" (Heather Kinley/Jennifer Kinley/Sarah
Majors/Adam Hughes)
Jennifer: Heather came up with this cool groove, and I remember
saying, "I don't really feel like writing a love song today. I'd
rather make a statement." We were writing with Adam Hughes and
Sarah Majors, and we love writing with them. We see eye to eye
when it comes to music, lyrics and melodies, and we really feed
off each other well. Heather: I love the way this came out. I
think it's my favorite song on the record.
"When The Blues And My Baby Collide" (Bob DiPiero/Paul Nelson)
Heather: This has got a bluesy feel that we love, and a bit of
a Judds influence. Jennifer: It was a really fun song to sing,
and Radney did a great job of giving this song a unique sound.
"Me Too" (Russ Zavitson/Stan Munsey)
Heather: One of our producers, Russ Zavitson wrote the song, and
his big influence is the Beatles. You can really hear it on this
song. We love his stuff, because he writes wild, funky melodies.
Jennifer: We were attracted to the melody from the start. We loved
how it was all over the place, yet really catchy. We felt like
it would be a fun challenge for us because we really had to hang
with each other and do very tight harmonies while following the
melody.
"Lovers" (Leslie Satcher/Wynn Varble)
Heather: This song is all about attitude, and at first I just
wasn't getting it in the studio. (Producers) Russ Zavitson and
Tony Haselden said, "We know you've got the attitude to sing this
song, you've just got to get it out." So I said, "OK, bring me
a shot of tequila." It got rid of my inhibitions just enough to
let me really lean into it. So, now the truth is out: I cut it
under the influence!
"I'm Me With You" (Heather Kinley/Jennifer Kinley/Marcus
Hummon)
Heather: This is our feet-tappin', hands-clapping, feel-good song.
The whole idea of the song is, "With you, I'm finally myself."
Jennifer: We wrote it with Marcus Hummon, who is an amazing writer.
"Yeah, Yeah, Yeah" (Heather Kinley/Jennifer Kinley/Marcus
Hummon)
Heather: This is another "attitude" song. Jennifer: It was fun
to write and fun to create in the studio. It's a tongue-in-cheek
bar scene. Everyone's probably been in a situation where some
smooth talker is hitting on you, and all you can do is roll your
eyes. That's what this song is about.
"Here" (Heather Kinley/Jennifer Kinley/Sunny Russ)
Heather: We wrote this with Sunny Russ, so it was an all girls'
perspective. Sunny's got a real cool groove outlook; she's a bit
like Sheryl Crow, and I'm a huge fan of Sheryl Crow. Jennifer:
We just love this song and the way it turned out.
"I Need You Now" (Tom Douglas/Michael Joyce)
Heather: Jennifer sings lead on this, and when I first heard her
sing it, she brought me to tears. It really moved me. The song
was just made for her. Jennifer: From the minute I heard it, it
just felt like me. It's got such a beautiful melody, and I had
a lot of fun singing it in the studio.
bonus cut
"Somebody's Out There Watching" (Robin Lerner/Franne Golde/Steve
Booker)
Heather: Sony New York originally sent us the song, because they
were looking for a country artist to sing on the Touched By An
Angel soundtrack. We loved it immediately-- I don't think they
could have sent us a better song for us. Jennifer: We were fans
of the show and were thrilled to be included on the soundtrack.
With all the trash that's on TV today, we thought it was a wonderful
thing to be a part of. Fans are always coming up to us on the
road and asking if we were going to put this song on one of our
records, so we were thrilled to be able to include it as a bonus
cut.
